Ovation Acoustic Guitar

I remember the first time I saw an Ovation acoustic guitar. It was while I was a kid watching MTV, Bon Jovi's video for their hit song Dead or Alive was on and Richie Sambora was playing an ovation electric acoustic guitar. My eyes lit up, I had never seen such an awesome acoustic guitar and it was electric too! I couldn't wait to get one for myself. Now I own several Ovation acoustic guitars and they are still my favorite acoustic guitar today.

Ovation guitars were first created in the early 1960s by a man named Charles Kaman. Charles Kaman loved playing guitar as a child but decided to get a bachelors degree in aeronautical engineering. He did not know at the time that this training would help him to later design the Ovation acoustic guitar that we know today.

After graduating Charles Kaman started his own helicopter design company. This company did not take flight and he was forced to pursue other avenues. Charles became very interested in the science and art behind guitar making. He had a passion for acoustic guitars and wanted to improve on the acoustic guitar design.

Using his aeronautics training he set out to do just that.

He created an acoustic guitar with a composite body and sides and he rounded the back like a bowl. This proved to carry the tone of the acoustic guitar further and is still used in Ovation acoustic guitars to this date. The use on onboard pre amps, equalization, and piezo pickups proved to be what every musician playing acoustic guitars live wanted. Live venues need louder volume acoustic guitars without fighting feedback, These onboard electronics found in the ovation acoustic guitars eliminated that feedback. Today many other acoustic guitar manufacturers have simply copied these electronics and added them to their own guitar lines.

Over the years Ovation acoustic guitars have gained popularity and are used by some world renown musicians such as Bon Jovi, John Lennon, Nikki Sixx, Shania Twain, Bob Marley and the list goes on.
